About This Performance
In Ear To The Ground, award-winning tap and swing dancer Caleb Teicher and celebrated percussive dancer Nic Gareiss draw on tap, swing, lindy hop, Appalachian clogging, and Irish step dance—braiding improvisation, song, and rhythm into a dynamic exchange of sound and movement. The result is an intimate, transportive performance that honors tradition while carving out a genre-defying percussive language all its own.
The New Yorker calls Teicher “one of the brightest lights in tap today,” while the Boston Herald praises Gareiss as “a show-stopper…the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene.”

Performer Biographies
Caleb Teicher is widely regarded as a leading performer, choreographer, director, musical collaborator, and curator of musically-driven dance and interdisciplinary collaboration.
A two-time Bessie Award winner (and five-time nominee), their work in concert dance and music has played some of the most prestigious venues in North America including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, New York City Center, Carnegie Hall, the Joyce Theater, and countless others. They’ve performed duets with Regina Spektor and Ben Folds on Broadway, television, and on music albums. They’ve graced the cover of Dance Magazine, and they’re the only dancer to be presented on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
Many shows created by Caleb (SW!NG OUT, Counterpoint, Ear To The Ground, B-Z-Z-Z) regularly tour performing arts centers in North America—their work will be presented in over twenty cities this year.
Caleb is also the inaugural Artist Curator in Residence for Works & Process.
One of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) is widely recognized for his singular voice in the realm of dance and the traditional arts. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog, flatfoot, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration.
He has concertized in seventeen countries with many of the luminaries of roots music and folk dance including Yasmin Williams, Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, Bruce Molsky, The Chieftains, Colin Dunne, Darol Anger, The Gloaming, Ira Bernstein, Liz Carroll, Phil Wiggins, and Sandy Silva. Gareiss has performed at London’s Barbican Centre, the Irish National Concert Hall, the Munich Philharmonic, and Carnegie Hall.
In addition to his two solo shows The Art of Treepling and Solo Square Dance, Nic collaborates in duo projects with Allison de Groot, Caleb Teicher, Cleek Schrey, Jake Blound, Laurel Premo, and others.
