About This Performance

More than any other artists, Trio Mediæval have popularized the music of 12th century composer, mystic, and philosopher Hildegard von Bingen, so it is fitting for them to devote most of this program to her music. The powerhouse trio of women has consistently shattered the ceilings of multiple musical genres, and has performed at contemporary and early music festivals, major concert halls, and jazz venues. “They blend seamlessly, yet their voices are distinctive enough that it’s easy to hear individual vocal lines and how they relate” (San Francisco Classical Voice). They’ll be joined by Hurdy-Gurdy player Kevin C. Devine for this performance.

Performer Biographies

Trio Mediæval is a Grammy®-nominated vocal trio devoted largely to medieval and folk repertory. However, it has also sung a substantial portion of contemporary works by such composers as Ivan Moody and Gavin Bryars. Consisting of three sopranos, the trio typically sings a cappella or with very sparing instrumental accompaniment. When performing sacred repertory, which is the largest portion of its recorded output, it usually sings without accompaniment, providing its own harmonies or singing in unison.

Kevin C. Devine performs engaging, often unconventional programs in his home base of New York and across the United States. Mr. Devine obtained degrees from Boston University and Stony Brook University, and most recently, received a graduate diploma at the Juilliard School.

He has been invited to play solo recitals on several concert series, including Gotham Early Music Scene in Manhattan and Harpsichord Heaven at the Barn at Flintwoods. As an accompanist and teacher, he has taken part in Amherst Early Music Festival, American Bach Soloists and San Francisco Early Music Society Baroque Workshop.

An avid hurdy-gurdy player, Devine explores the breadth of the repertoire for the instrument, from the cantigas de Santa Maria to 18th-century arrangements of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
