35th Season Gala

On October 17, San Francisco Performances celebrated the launch of its 35th Season with its annual fundraising Gala at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco. The event—which featured a performance by jazz pianist Kenny Barron and vibraphonist Stefon Harris—was a great success and raised more than $184,000 to support SF Performances’ award-winning arts education programs.

Hosted by Gala Chairs Gussie Stewart and Martin Quinn, the evening began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Guests then proceeded into the Ballroom for dinner and a short performance from two talented young jazz musicians from the Oakland School for the Arts, Gus Hurteau on vibraphone and Caleb Sankoh on piano. Both students began their jazz instruction at Westlake Middle School, a long standing recipient of San Francisco Performances’ education programs.

A spirited Fund-a-Need drive—led by the gala chairs—followed. The drive was introduced by Stefon Harris and his heartfelt remarks were especially meaningful as he was one of San Francisco Performances’ first jazz artists-in-residence, and his residency launched our partnership with Westlake Middle School. Touched by his words, guests gave generously, and the Fund-a-Need brought in over $65,000, the most ever raised.

The evening concluded with a stellar performance from Stefon and Kenny Barron, with the duo entertaining guests with a selection of jazz standards and their own compositions.
