St. John’s Presbyterian Church
2727 College Ave.
St. John's Presbyterian Church was originally located in the building now known as the Julia Morgan Theatre. In 1955, the church bought the present property on College and Forest and occupied the fellowship hall and adjoining classrooms while maintaining various ministries on “two campuses.” In 1968, a generous bequest from Dr. Howard Campbell made it possible to complete the building of the new church and all the necessary accessory areas. In 1974, the “old church” was vacated and services were temporarily held in the Fellowship Hall until the sanctuary was finished one year later. In late 1978 the final mortgage payment had been made on the entire property and a grand service of burning the mortgage was held.
St. John’s Presbyterian Church has a small parking lot with limited availability. On some occaisions, such as University of California, Berkeley football game days, the lot will be unavailable for parking. There is also street parking available. Please be aware that most streets around the church have a two-hour parking limit. On performance days when the church parking lot is unavailable, we will request parking enforcement begin at 11am. This is only a request that parking enforecement may choose not to honor. Please check your car at intermission to determine if your tire has been chalked.
The AC Transit 51 line passes directly by the Church on College Avenue. Two BART stations are equally close to the theater. From the Rockridge BART Station you can either walk (approx. 1½ miles) or catch the AC Transit 51 line right at BART. The other station is the Downtown Berkeley Station. From here you can catch the 51 bus on the West side of Shattuck.
