To experience a live performance of the acoustic guitar is to marvel at the transcendence of humble materials—wood, metal, gut—the intimacy of human touch and the inspiration interpretive genius. The legendary Andrés Segovia, “grandfather of the classical guitar”, summed it up observing that the guitar speaks directly to and from the heart, explaining its intimate power and universal appeal. San Francisco Performances, in partnership with the Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts, brings many of the world’s most acclaimed artists, from the US, Russia, Uruguay, France and, of course, Spain, for Bay Area concerts. These artists demonstrate the universality of the guitar in unusual combinations and programs including guitar relatives the lute and bandoneon, spanning 600 years of repertory.

Jason Vieaux makes his San Francisco Performances debut, with bandoneonist Julien Labro, for an evening of works by Piazzolla, Arvo Pärt, Pat Metheny and others, in which they infuse traditional classical music with diverse performance approaches including tango and jazz. Eliot Fisk and Angel Romero return together as two of the world’s great solo artists performing duets and solos. Great American lutenist Paul O’Dette returns to the Bay Area for a rare recital of Renaissance masterpieces, and the series also introduces prize-winning Russian guitarist Irina Kulikova and welcomes back Uruguayan master Alvaro Pierri.
