For their Salon debut, they pair American composer Joan Tower’s evocative Night Fields (1994)—“where waves of fast-moving colors ripple over the field, occasionally settling on a patch of gold”—with Mendelssohn’s last string quartet, Op. 80 (1847), a Requiem for his beloved sister, Fanny.

SFP’s vocal resident artist Nicholas Phan performs selections from his recently-released fourth solo album. Gods & Monsters is an expression of the acclaimed lyric tenor's life-long fascination with myths and legends, and a testament to this singer’s great gift for storytelling through the medium of song. Phan joins forces with pianist Robert Mollicone to explore this thematic program of Lieder by the great Romantic composers of the Germanic tradition: songs recounting tall tales of the godly, the gallant and the grotesque—the fantastical and the fearsome.

At this solo Salon, we’ll hear the range of his musical influences, from pop, folk, Brazilian jazz to classical works and improvisation. In Simon’s own words: “I strive to get to the essence of the message I wish to communicate by making every note count, just as every word counts in a good story.”
