About This Performance
Russell Maliphant’s Nijinsky-inspired AfterLight was a hit at the “In the Spirit of Diaghilev” program at Sadler’s Wells and, in its original form as a 15-minute solo, was nominated for the 2009 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Now an evening-length meditation on the artistry and historic importance of Ballets Russes legend Vaslav Nijinksy, AfterLight was the result of choreographer Maliphant’s inspiration by and exposure to Nijinsky’s sketches, geometric drawings and paintings as well as photographs of the dancer while reading his biography. Maliphant, who trained at the Royal Ballet School and performed with Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and the iconoclastic DV8 Physical Theatre, is hailed for creating stunningly powerful and lyrically analytic works and AfterLight is no exception.
The Russell Maliphant Company was established in 1996 as the framework for Maliphant to initiate productions and to work with his own ensemble of dancers. His work is characterised by a unique approach to flow and energy and an ongoing exploration of the relationship between movement, light and music. For over 17 years, Maliphant has worked closely with pioneering lighting designer Michael Hulls to explore and realise these ideas.
