SAN FRANCISCO, CA—April 3, 2020—San Francisco Performances (SFP) announces today the free online release of selected audio recordings from its vast archive of full-length past performances. The first performance of the series called “Front Row” will be available online on our website on Thursday, April 9, with subsequent audio recordings released on a weekly basis through mid-May.

”This season SF Performances had planned several programs in celebration of our 40th anniversary. While we can’t be together to enjoy beautiful live music right now, we are pleased to offer these memorable concerts from the past. Each performance in this short series was recorded live at the Herbst Theatre, from 2004–08. So let’s continue to celebrate our history, while looking forward to continuing to do what we do best—bringing great artists and audiences together for transformative arts experiences.” —SFP President, Melanie Smith

Monday, March 16, as word of Mayor London Breed’s order to begin sheltering-in-place was announced, Melanie Smith gathered up handfuls of CD audio recordings of SFP performances, all of which were recorded by the Herbst Theatre production staff over the past three decades. “That night when I brought them home I realized that some might be too old to transfer, but I also marveled at the treasury of music I was holding, and that we had recorded for so many years, just as archives of those performances, with no intent to share or distribute at the time. Although these are audio-only recordings, I am sure that many of our patrons who attended these concerts will remember the night clearly once they hear the program again“ says Smith. In fact Smith says that in getting artist approval to air these via the SFP website, many of the artists distinctly remembered their specific concert even as long as sixteen years ago.

About San Francisco Performances

San Francisco Performances has been a leader in the Bay Area cultural scene since our founding in 1979. With a strong curatorial vision and adventurous programming, we are the city’s premier presenter of intimate concerts and solo performances.

We have introduced hundreds of established and emerging classical music, jazz and dance artists to audiences, including Yo-Yo Ma, the Juilliard String Quartet, Philip Glass, Wendy Whelan, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. We also champion a new generation, committed to building a contemporary and equitable repertoire. Performers like violinist Jennifer Koh, tenor Lawrence Brownlee and pianist/composer Vijay Iyer are moving their art into the present and future, making it accessible to younger audiences while converting many traditionalists to new possibilities. They represent the path forward.

Quality, intimacy and connection are the hallmarks of San Francisco Performances. We nurture unique relationships with today’s best artists to create an accessible, warm and engaging arts experience.
